Privacy Policy

Smart Lawn Guide respects your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we safeguard your information when you visit our website, subscribe to the newsletter, or shop through affiliate links.

Information we collect

We only collect personal data necessary to deliver our content and improve the reader experience:

  • Newsletter sign-ups: We store your name (optional) and email address to send weekly updates. The newsletter is powered by ConvertKit, which maintains industry-standard security and unsubscribe links in every email.
  • Analytics: We use privacy-friendly analytics (Fathom Analytics) to understand which pages are popular. This tool anonymizes IP addresses and does not use cookies.
  • Contact emails: Messages sent to austin@smartlawnguide.com are stored in Gmail for record-keeping and follow-up. We delete sensitive information upon request.
  • Affiliate tracking: When you click outbound product links, retailers may set cookies to track referrals and confirm purchases. We do not have access to individual purchase data - only aggregated sales totals.

How we use your information

The information we collect supports the core functions of Smart Lawn Guide:

  • Send newsletters, seasonal checklists, and course updates you signed up to receive.
  • Answer questions and manage collaboration requests that arrive via email.
  • Monitor site performance, troubleshoot errors, and prioritize the topics readers care about.
  • Track affiliate commissions that fund ongoing field tests and content production.

We never sell or rent your personal information. Data is only shared with processors that help us run the site (email provider, analytics platform, and web hosting) under contractual agreements.

Cookies & tracking technologies

Smart Lawn Guide currently operates without first-party tracking cookies. Some third-party services we rely on, such as embedded YouTube videos, social media posts, or affiliate retailers, may set their own cookies. These cookies are controlled by the third parties and governed by their privacy policies. You can disable cookies through your browser settings or use a privacy extension to limit third-party tracking.

Data retention

Newsletter data remains in our email service provider until you unsubscribe or request deletion. Contact emails are archived for up to 24 months so we can reference project notes and follow through on commitments. Analytics data is aggregated and does not contain personal identifiers. If you would like any personal data removed sooner, email us and we will confirm once it has been deleted.

Your rights & choices

You have control over how your information is used:

  • Unsubscribe from emails using the link at the bottom of any newsletter.
  • Request a copy, correction, or deletion of your personal data by emailing us directly.
  • Block affiliate and embedded content cookies using browser settings or the preferences provided by each third-party service.

Children's privacy

Smart Lawn Guide is intended for adults managing home gardens. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can delete it promptly.

Policy updates

We review this policy annually and whenever we launch new features that affect data handling. Updates will be posted on this page with a revised effective date. If the changes materially affect your privacy rights, we will announce them in the newsletter.
